From Howard to Harvard

Written by our Founder + Creative Director, Tahir “Legacy” Murray

Last month, I had the opportunity to speak at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

I was invited by iCreate, a series by the HGSE African Student Organization designed to bring students together for real conversation, collaboration, and impact. It’s a space where creators connect through authentic dialogue, shared resources, and the kind of energy that turns ideas into action.

I gave a 30-minute presentation on LHP and the significance of the work we do within HBCU culture, followed by a Q&A. To be honest, public speaking was never on my bingo card when I started LHP but I keep finding myself in rooms where I’m called to share my two main messages:

  1. Do what you love.
  2. Find ways to turn that love into impact for others.

One thing I’ve learned from speaking on college campuses is that there’s a major misconception around career paths. People often think you have to choose between building a for-profit business and being purpose-driven in your community. The truth is, you can do both.

I’m just someone who loved clothes, DJing, throwing parties with my friends, and creating with my peers. Somewhere along the way, I learned how to connect those passions with intention. When you shift the focus from “what can I gain?” to “how can this serve others?”, your work naturally becomes purpose-driven.

That mindset is what’s allowed LHP to give six figures in scholarships.
It’s what led to collaborations with brands like Nickelodeon, NASCAR, and Google.

We’ve always stayed rooted in what we love and that authenticity continues to attract partners who want to build something meaningful alongside us.

It’s not rocket science or a magic formula. It just takes critical thinking about who you are and why you do what you do and staying grounded in that.

If there’s one thing that I learned from my undergrad experience at Howard University is that  it’s not about what you do, it’s about why you do it. You’ll be amazing to see where that “why” will carry you to next.
